About Podcasting
Podcasts are a great way to keep up with the latest news in the IT world and beyond. A podcast is just a series of audio or video clips that are published regularly on the Internet and they’re an increasingly popular way of listening to content.
Unlike with traditional media such as television and radio, you can listen to new podcast episodes any time after they’re published whenever it’s convenient for you.
Finding Podcasts
There’s a huge array of podcasts available on subjects ranging from gardening to music and entertainment.
Some companies and organisations such as Apple’s iTunes Music Store, Odeo, Podcast Alley and Yahoo! maintain comprehensive directories of podcast series that you can subscribe to. Or, if you’re after a specific podcast - such as Alfresco’s Open Source Talk - then you may be able to find this by vistiting the web site of that company or organisation or by performing a web search.
Listening to Podcasts
Once you’ve found a podcast that you like, you can listen to an episode on your computer or you can subscribe to the podcast’s feed, so that your computer automatically downloads new episodes on your behalf as they become available.
If you have a portable music device like an iPod then you can also transfer podcast episodes onto there so that you can listen to them on the move.
Creating Podcasts
One of the joys of podcasting is that anyone can get involved and create their own. There’s a good tutorial on this available from Yahoo! Podcasts.
