Because the world needs an alternative to SharePoint…

November 12th, 2008 by Bolaji Oyejide
The World needs an alternative to SharePoint

The World needs an alternative to SharePoint

…is the answer.

The question:
Why is our Chief Marketing Officer, Ian Howells, giving a webinar presentation tomorrow (12pm EST)?

SharePoint has been incredibly successful for group and departmental collaboration. Especially when it comes to managing Office documents.

However, it has not succeeded in displacing Enterprise Content Management solutions. ECM solutions still have a place in the Enterprise, and now co-exist along with SharePoint.

This webinar describes how Alfresco Share, part of the Alfresco 3.0 Enterprise release, offers a great experience for team collaboration.

In addition, Alfresco introduces SharePoint protocol support, which allows Microsoft Office users to use Alfresco as the back-end, negating one of the key advantages of SharePoint.

We will focus this webinar on the core use cases of SharePoint - collaboration and light enterprise content management.

  • Lower Total Cost of Ownership.
  • Operating expense versus Capital expense.
  • Re-use of existing technical skills.
  • Increased scalability.
  • More flexibility in infrastructure choices.

Join Ian as he lays out these and other arguments. For an open alternative to SharePoint in the enterprise.

Open source is doing more for less: I.T. in a weak economy.

November 3rd, 2008 by Bolaji Oyejide

Recession-proof software

Alfresco’s release of it’s Enterprise 3.0 edition software comes in the midst of what could be a nationwide recession.

In that light, corporations are tightening budgets, and (once again) asking their I.T. managers to spend less.

And still meet the business’ needs. After all, budgets come and go, but demanding internal users are a constant.

Open source software like JBoss, MySQL, Alfresco, and others, may be uniquely positioned to get I.T. managers through this rough patch.

  • They move I.T. departments away from high up-front investments.
  • Away from long roll-out cycles and complex integrations.
  • Away from vendor lock-in, and limited choice.

So this month, we take our Road Show to San Francisco (November 13th) and New York (November 14th).

We’ll demonstrate how enterprise ready open source software like Alfresco’s can lend themselves to a recession-proof I.T. infrastructure.

Content will include:

  • Building strong I.T. in a weak economy.
  • How to do MORE with LESS, with your content management applications.
  • How to bring Web 2.0 functionality to your ECM infrastructure.
  • The benefits of replacing your shared drive with Alfresco.
  • Alfresco Share: Easy social computing for the Enterprise.
  • Alfresco Surf: Easy-to-build UIs for your content applications.
  • The top 10 reasons why enterprises need an alternative to SharePoint.
  • And don’t miss the Apple iPod Touch raffle drawing.
How are you doing more with less, in your I.T. environment?
Is open source playing a role?

Market Street, San Francisco

This complimentary breakfast seminar will feature concrete examples of Alfresco, being used by prominent enterprises, to solve real business problems.

Come and meet I.T. managers who are succeeding with Alfresco, and other open source applications.

Easy, open, value.

Slashdot poll: What Would Benefit Most By Adopting an Open-Source Development Method?

July 12th, 2008 by Bolaji Oyejide

Law. Religion. Medicine. The Economy. Politics.

And a couple of other interesting (and somewhat sarcastic) options.  All are part of this Slashdot poll.

On the face of it is seems like a harmless, casual question.  But in thinking about these various facets of society, and knowing what we know about the benefits of organized collaboration… we might very well want to take another look at the application of open source thinking, beyond technology.

So which of these realms could most benefit from the Wisdom of Crowds?

The leading option may surprise you.
