USA, France, Germany and Spain are the Leaders in Open Source

The third Open Source Barometer found that the US continued to be the largest adopter of open source globally. However, it is interesting to note that open source has a “long tail” effect with, in this case, over 180 countries being members of the community and the European tail being 2.5 times the size of the US.

Geographic Distribution of Members inthe Open Source Barometer

We believe that in Europe, government is driving adoption, with leading exponents being France, Germany and Spain. India is also significantly increasing its use of open source.

Ian, can you be a bit more specific on these numbers. Leaders in what? What is 20%? The total IT market? New installations? Installed base? Alfresco only? Thanks!

  2. Ian Howells Says:

    Hi Frank,
    Thanks for the comment.
A previous post and the white paper points out:
“Alfresco provides valuable content on the Web free to the Alfresco community, including documentation, frequently asked questions and answers, sample applications, a developer toolbox, recorded webinars, training and white papers. When users join the community they are asked to complete a questionnaire on their preferred software stack and geography. This information helps Alfresco to prioritize platform and stack combinations for the benefit of the larger community.”

The statistics in this post refer to the geography of the members joining the Alfresco Content Community. The numbers are also mirrored by hits on our website.
